What are available modern contraceptive methods?

There are currently four categories of modern contraceptive methods that the government of Malawi through Ministry of Health and World Health Organisation permits to issue to all people of reproductive age (10-25+ years). These are Short Acting Contraception like condoms, oral or pills, and injectables; Long Acting and Reversible Contraception like loop and implants; Permanent Contraception like vasectomy and bilateral tubal ligation; and Natural Contraception like beads method.

What is ideal age for contraception?

There is no specific age recommended to use contraception. Contraception is meant for all people of reproductive age (10-25+ years).

Can I use more than one family planning method?

YES! Dual protection from unintended pregnancy as well as venereal infections can be achieved by using other pregnancy prevention contraceptives combined with male and female condoms.

What is emergency contraception?

These are pills that are taken either before sex or after sex to avoid unintended pregnancy. The pills are supposed to be taken within 72 hours after sex. If fertilization has already taken place, the method does not work. These pills have upper help to girls and women who face sexual gender based violence.

What is the difference between hormonal and non-hormonal contraception?

Hormonal contraception like pills, injectables and implants contain estrogen and progesterone while non hormonal contraception like condoms and loop do not have any hormones.

Why should I choose a female condom?

Female condom is other benefits the male condom cannot stand. It can be put on 8 hours before sex, it is thicker, and it gives a woman control over condom use

Is it true that implants move in a woman’s body?

No! It is not true. Once insertion has been done, the user can feel the stick(s) on the arm and the stick(s) can be removed if the user requests so. This provides evidence that it does not move.

Is it true hormonal contraception causes infertility and cancer?

No. It is not true.

What does FPAM do?

Family Planning Association of Malawi (FPAM) is a local nongovernmental organization that provides comprehensive Youth Friendly Sexual and Reproductive Health Services to young people aged 10 – 24 years old, and all people of reproductive age. Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) Services in FPAM centers are provided in specially designed clinics branded as Youth Life Centers. FPAM provides both static and mobile community based SRHR services. Main focus is on the hard to reach and underserved communities in order to increase access to the services. These outreach sites are located in all the traditional authorities in the districts where FPAM is implementing its programmes. The organization was founded on 25th September, 1999.

Where is FPAM located?

FPAM operates in all the districts in Malaŵi depending on need and availability of funds but it has static clinics in Mzuzu, Kasungu, Dowa, Lilongwe, Dedza, Ntcheu, and Mangochi districts.

Is FPAM recognized by the Malawi Government and other authorities?

FPAM is a locally Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights – Centre of Excellence in SRHR organisation, registered as non-governmental organisation and recognized partner of Ministry of Health. It is affiliated as a member association to International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF).

How can I join as an FPAM volunteer?

o Technically owners of FPAM as a trustee organisation are the volunteers. FPAM has adult and youth volunteers wings who all have a representation in FPAM board, a large body that oversees implementation of FPAM strategic goals, its sustainability of its partnerships and recommending its plans and monitoring its growth.
