Set Up
- Set up massage table with headrest
- Put face cradle cover and bottom sheet on
- Then place foil body wrap on table:
- Should be about 1 inch from top of table
- Long portion of foil should be hanging off sides of table (so you have plenty of foil to wrap and cocoon the client)
- Top sheet goes over the foil
- Note: If doing a couple’s service ensure you are all on the same steps at the same time; Keep an eye on what each other is doing
- Since some people may feel claustrophobic, it is important to check in frequently after wrapping client
PART 1: Dry Brushing (estimate: 10 minutes; 4 minutes each side with time to turn over)
- Invite client to get comfortable on the table face UP and under the sheet, head resting on the table (not on the face cradle) while you excuse yourself from the room to wash your hands
- Dry Brushing Tips
- Use long strokes, feather light pressure, brisk movements
- As you go over an area, follow it with your hand to soothe; brush each area 3-5 times
- Always go in the direction of the heart; Pressure must be very light to support lymphatic system and speed must be brisk, upward motion
- Use tight draping techniques to move the sheet to expose one leg and begin dry brushing with foot/leg #1
- Start at sole of foot going towards ankle, then leg, then thigh, then side of glute
- Re-drape leg #1 and repeat for foot/leg #2
- Re-drape legs and move to arms
- Dry brush hand/arm 1 and then hand/arm 2; move sheet down to chest and brush upper chest area; maintain tight draping on sides for modesty
- Using the bath towel folded in half the long way, then half again the long way; place the towel over the client’s breasts, over the sheet, so the towel covers their breasts on top and sides. Then gently shimmy the sheet down while holding the towel in place; folding the sheet down after you get it out from under the towel. This will reveal the stomach for dry brushing while maintaining modesty across breasts
- Dry brush stomach; work in clockwise direction
- Re-drape client with full sheet and shimmy away the towel from under the sheet
- Guide client to turn over to prone and place face in the cradle while you hold the flat sheet up and away from you so they can modestly turn
- Drape leg #1 and dry brush the back of calves, legs, glute
- Re-drape leg #1 and do same for leg #2
- Re-drape legs
- Dry brush back/shoulders
PART 2: Apply Body Wrap Lotion (estimate: 10 minutes; 4 minutes each side with time to turn over)
- Apply lotion while they are face down
- With gentle but intentional pressure, apply lotion as a mask on the skin; Use a generous amount to fully cover all areas without soaking in skin
- Begin in prone position, face down on the table
- Start with feet and work upwards for both legs, glutes, and back
- Tight draping techniques should be respected for modesty as followed during dry brushing
- Direct the client to move down far enough to rest head on table and then turn face up while you hold the flat sheet
- Apply lotion, in this order:
- Feet (top then bottom)
- Legs
- Hands and Arms
- Shoulders
- Upper chest
- Follow same tight modesty draping as respected during dry brushing
- Arrange the towel over breasts as did during dry brushing and then apply lotion to stomach
- Once lotion has been applied re-drape with sheet and remove the towel
PART 3: Wrapping (estimate 5 minutes)
- Take the foil blanket on the left side and put it over the client
- Go on the right side and take the right-side foil and wrap up the client
- Then gently shimmy away the top sheet so they are completely wrapped in the foil
- Adjust the wrap to ensure it is completely covering the client and tight enough to hold in heat
- Cover the client with blanket
Note: if a client is claustrophobic, ask if they prefer to have their hands out of the wrap.
PART 4: While In Wrap (22 minutes)
- Gentle Foot massage – 6 minutes on each foot
- Gentle scalp massage – 10 minutes
Note: If a client has a preference, could do all 22 minutes on feet or scalp; discuss prior to the entire service beginning. Allow client to request elevated pressure, as gentle effleurage strokes best support the outcome of this treatment.
PART 5: Unwrapping/Light Massage (10 Minutes)
- Working with the blanket as a drape, gently unwrap the foil from the client on the left side then the right side
- Starting with legs and same draping procedures as with dry brushing, gently massage the lotion into the legs, then arms, and top of chest area – do not massage stomach
- Guide client to turn onto their stomach and do the same light massage on their back and back of legs
Note: This is a light massage. The intention is to work in the lotion, support circulation, and relax post treatment but DO ask client how the pressure is and if they prefer a deeper pressure.
Note: For clients who booked additional massage time, either 30 minutes or 60 minutes (which you will be made aware of prior to start of the appointment) add that time ON to the 10 minutes of the protocol. So a client would then get 40 minutes or 70 minutes of massage. Treat that as you would a regular massage. Have clients flip half way through and follow regular Swedish or Deep Tissue protocols – depending on pressure the client is requesting.
